What is this year's theme?

Last year, our inaugural theme was "The Year of Messy Design," because starting anything is messy, and exciting! Thanks to your curiosity and enthusiasm, you helped us rewrite what a design festival can be. Our first year also left us wondering: now that we’d made a proper and hugely enjoyable mess, what do we do with it? This year, we invite you to venture with us into the “Unwritten,” our theme for 2019.

  • UNWRITTEN is everything we do and make without pausing to give or receive explanation--all the systems and rituals that we participate and move within, but rarely see. It’s those unspoken gestures and actions between us that make and break our community.
  • UNWRITTEN is about working together to uncover what’s been hidden or forgotten. It calls us to lay it bare, unearth, get naked, be curious. To encounter each other.
  • UNWRITTEN means that nothing is set in stone--that when we connect, we can discover things we never could have imagined. It means we can rewrite the story and our futures for the better.
MDW is inspired by the stories of design that we have yet to write — how things are being made, who it’s being made for and by, and why it matters. Montclair Design Week explores these questions through playful, inclusive, and thought-provoking programming that sparks our curiosity into action. What are the stories of design that you want to write?

How are out-of-pocket/material costs handled?

We encourage a process that designs with intention to limit waste and miximize impact. Here are some strategies we will take: Partner with a local supplier for in-kind contributions. Chances are, they would be thrilled to be a part of Montclair Design Week, too! Put out a call to our friends and neighbors for things that we can borrow, instead of buying something new. Design the event so that attendees can bring things or materials needed. When these strategies aren't possible, we will build budget of all costs and factor these into the price of the event's ticket.

What is Montclair Design Week?

Montclair Design Week connects and engages our community in a week of thought-provoking, playful, and inclusive events that celebrate how design enriches our lives in ways both large and small, visible and unseen. From panels, workshops, walks and talks to film series, festivities, installations and competitions, our programming is sure to ignite the designer in all of us.

Can you describe this culinary event in more detail?

Held on Monday, October 21, we will be raising the bar on what it means to gather around the act of eating. We are inviting you to collaborate with MDW to create one evening of otherworldly and multi-sensory experiences involving feasting, music and conversation to celebrating community through the power of design. We believe that by bringing together the collaborative talents of culinary artists, gatherers, growers, makers and producers, we will write new stories about the health of our community. This culinary event will unfold over several courses, meandering through morsels of taste, sound, sight, touch and smell that leave our guests transformed and inspired about Montclair's eating future.

What happens to the food and installation after the event?

We will be partnering with local food banks, homeless shelters, after-school programs, community gardens and senior centers to ensure that event items are given new homes. A limited number of items will be auctioned in order to seed future projects through Awesome Montclair, our partner organization. This outcome will be factored in during the process of the event's design, and demonstrate alternative ways to limit waste and maximize impact.

What kinds of collaborators are you looking for?

We are looking for people who are passionate about all aspects of food and eating - from cooking to growing to designing the setting. Are you a culinary artist, backyard grower, forager, food maker, or obsessed with the setting of meals? If you any of these, please join us.
