Our HQ’s walls will be a “blank slate” that we hope you’ll fill in with your writing, doodles, and drawings of your stories, discoveries, and possibilities for what our future holds.

Fill in the blanks on a giant board and put your own spin on the story of Montclair. All you need to join in are some walloping nouns, vivacious verbs, and stupendous adjectives.
Host: Brandsisters.

We use popular Montclair locations as examples while exploring techniques, terms, and strategies that have long-lasting, positive effects on people, communities, and the environment.
Host: Neil Chambers (Chambers Design).

Teams are going head-to-head, “Chopped style,” developing their proposals for Montclair into visualizations that will be presented to a diverse panel of community allies.

Come help design and build the oversized chicken-wire base for a hanging ceiling installation for our Sup-Culture event.
Host: Amy Gofton (Studio Nectar).

Competition team proposals developed on October 20 remain on display until October 27, when the public makes the final call on which idea will be put into action with a $1,000 grant from the Awesome Foundation.

What objects should occupy your living space? In this workshop, you’ll go beyond the nuts and bolts of the KonMari method and learn how to curate a home that sparks joy and delights the soul. Hosts: Cassidy Nasello (Felt)

Learn how to design several unique dishes, and bask in the glow of dining together.
Hosts: Altarik Banks (Homa Studio), Amy Gofton (Studio Nectar), Iain Kerr (SPURSE Research + Design Collective), Ruth Borgenicht (ceramicist).

Picture a shirt design just like LOVE Montclair! Participants will listen to an intro on the process and then make a screen and use ink to create a design on fabric. Host: Shaun Killman (SK Design/Build)

For one night only, we gather for a multisensory experimental dinner crafted by some of Montclair’s foragers, designers, artisans, and chefs!
Guest: Madeline Schwartzman (See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception, Vols. 1 and 2).

Do you think about the trees around you? Take a walk from the library to Porter Park and challenge your unwritten ideas about trees.
Host: Angelique Kenney (Earth and Sky School)

Work with water, sunshine, and light-sensitive paper to turn everyday objects into new creations called cyanotypes.

Delve into how black entrepreneurs can leverage authenticity and passion to design businesses.

Teams will present their ideas here, one last time, before the public vote begins. Join us as we collectively choose which team will be granted $1,000 to launch their idea into action, thanks to Awesome Montclair!

In true community style, Montclair Design Week wraps up its more than 60 events with a blowout party! Due to the rain, the party is now at the HUB—which has attracted entrepreneurs, makers, and designers all week—and our activity lineup is sure to please.

Put your basic color knowledge to the test! We will be working with dye pots, made from locally foraged plant matter and local restaurant waste.

Come create and bring to life an assortment of fantastic puppets, and help them wend their way through town—singing, dancing, and having lots of puppet fun!

Planning a reno? Come to the Renovation Dating Game! Meet an architect, a contractor, and a realtor. Should you take home contestant 1, 2, or 3—or all of them? Moderator: Marissa Rothkopf Bates (journalist, writer)

This workshop curiously looks at our mindless daily activity and explores “unwritten” habits. Together we will uncover roadmaps that will allow us to redesign our personal wellness stories.

Bartenders and mixologists will be challenged to craft an original cocktail that features an ingredient local to Montclair.

Explore the potential of the book cover to be an experimental design space. Moderator: Margot Sage-El (Watchung Booksellers). Panelists: Janet Hansen (Knopf), Katie Klimowicz (Macmillan Children’s), Jordan Wannemacher (Studio Jordan Wannemacher)

Scavenger hunters will explore Montclair via video prompts, and shoot their own footage along the way.

This action-packed session will spark creative thinking about streets as public spaces.

Come learn how the CLAV (Confidence, Look, Approach, Voice) can transform your brand.

Three deejays, plus three music channels to choose from. DJ Butta, BlissedOut Beats, and DJ Mega will be playing the dance tunes to keep you on the dance floor all night long!

Take an empty model of a living space and a narrative about its inhabitants, and design and decorate the model to complete the characters’ stories!

At this fast-paced event, eight presenters will build a 48-point “change manifesto” before our eyes, and demonstrate what we can start accomplishing now.

After learning the principles of boro as practiced through sashiko (stitching techniques), and receiving expert advice, you’ll start mending a garment you’ve brought from home. Hosts: Paige Sato, Kristen Carlberg (Modern Maker Studio).

This workshop will help you release limiting beliefs and develop a personal or brand manifesto, and a vision board for your next best project.

Ben Uyeda founded HomeMade Modern, an online platform that is bringing design to the masses—it has more than a million subscribers. His talk will cover his “trickle-up design” idea as well as his most recent projects.
