INTRODUCTION
How can we imagine a future of enrichment learning where children of all grade levels can socialize, mentor and engage with the outdoors in playful, hands-on ways? We invite you to submit your most innovative and creative ideas for a multi-functional pop-up structure that can serve diverse populations throughout Montclair, and that can grow into a year-round community asset in its host neighborhood. Winning designs will be awarded a $2,000 stipend to build and put into action immediately.
THE CHALLENGE
The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the inequities that persist in public education around access, resources, and social justice. "Design for Outdoor Learning" design competition seeks to address these concerns with an open call for designs that consider community-based solutions over the emerging trend of learning pods. We invite you to consider how inclusive designs for learning, exploration, and play can transform Montclair’s public spaces and result in more just outcomes for our city.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Inclusive and equitable designs that nurture discovery, play and hands-on learning in an enrichment, after-school setting.
Moveable designs that will be used in various locations across Montclair, such as school yards, church yards, parks and other public spaces.
Space for 10-12 school-aged young people and 1 facilitator to maintain safe “physical distancing”.
Low-cost and temporary designs that can be executed quickly and are easy to maintain year-round will be given priority (estimated design/build costs should not exceed $2,000)
Designs that incorporate options to shade from sun, or protect from rain.
