Shield Our Heroes

Help us protect 30,000 frontline workers by May 22!

When we saw how urgent the need was for PPE supplies, we launched "Shield Our Heroes," an effort to roll out 30,000 face shields with our friends at MIXLAB. Working with a network of designers, makers, engineers, doctors, artists, journalists, and nurses, and using basic 3D printing and easy-to-find materials, we’ve brought the manufacturing cost of these life-saving face shields down to 1$/shield.

These shields are effective, washable, reusable and inexpensive.  Every shield helps our doctors, nurses and first responders stay safe and save lives on the front lines.

Watch our story to find out how we made it happen.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP

WHO YOU ARE HELPING

WHO'S BEHIND THIS PROJECT

While this is a project of DesignShed (parent org of Montclair Design Week  ) + MIX Lab   (Montclair State University), this project could not happen without the vast global network of makers, designers, medical professionals, artists and engineers who shared designs before us, and inspired us to improve what's possible.

THE TEAM BEHIND THE DESIGN

Curious how our team arrived at the current design of our Shield Our Heroes face shields? Tune in to hear Iain Kerr and Altarik Banks of MIXLAB describe the design process, who we collaborated with and how we're able to produce over 1,000 face shields a day, for $1 a shield.

NETWORK OF COLLABORATORS!

Watch our interview with Michael Rees, Director of Center for New Art at William Paterson University. We ask him about the role that "New Jersey Makers' Response to COVID 19" Facebook group has had in this project, and how he imagines the future role of makerspaces.

AMAZING VOLUNTEERS!

Delivering 30,000 face shields by April 30 would be a tall order, were it not for the incredible team of volunteers! Hundreds of amazing people have stepped up to help coordinate with hospitals, assemble face shields and make deliveries to those in need. Watch them in action!
